The deal will see Biffa collect and manage almost 15,000 tonnes of waste from over 30 DS Smith sites across the UK for the next three years.

A total of 20 waste streams are included, from general waste, dry mixed recyclables and food to ink, mixed wood and liquid waste, serviced by a range of Biffa vehicles, including a fleet of tankers.

Maxine Mayhew, chief operating officer, collections & specialist services, Biffa, said: “This is a fantastic group-wide contract that’s a real testament to the strength of our service offering as the UK’s leading sustainable waste management provider.

“We have the expertise and the infrastructure to deliver highly complex solutions for large organisations, and I’m delighted DS Smith, who share our sustainability vision and values, have trusted us to manage the waste at 34 of its sites across Scotland, England and Wales which will see zero waste sent to landfill, using more sustainable and carbon-efficient alternatives for waste that can’t be recycled.”

Paul Clarke, managing director UK and Ireland Packaging Division, DS Smith, said: “We are pleased to award a zero-waste-to-landfill collection and disposal contract to Biffa for our UK Packaging division. Sustainability remains a key driver for us, and we are happy to work with an organisation that specialises in sustainable waste management solutions.

“Part of our mission is to keep materials in use for longer and we have demonstrated that by replacing more than one billion pieces of plastic over a year ahead of target. Through this new deal with Biffa, we are helping tackle one of our ‘Now & Next’ sustainability goal of sending zero waste to landfill by 2030.”
